Using predictive analytics technology, which includes data modeling and mining and machine learning, is often referred to as predictive coding or technology assisted review in the legal industry. Using predictive analytics has been increasing over the last five years, but it still hasn’t hit mainstream.

Predictive analytics isn’t an easy button. It requires thoughtful workflow and expertise. When used correctly, it will save time and money and increase the overall quality of the review process. Predictive technology relies on skilled attorneys as its teacher, must be carefully monitored by technology professionals, and identifies the documents it understands to be relevant based solely on what it learns from the attorneys. It can be an incredible cost- and time-saver, but at its core it is simply a modified workflow that intelligently leverages computer technology—that’s all.
